Pool surrounds

In short

A pool surround is walked on wet, barefoot and at speed, so slip rating is the specification, not a preference — R11 minimum and R12 preferred, with a fine aggregate blend or rounded stamped relief for comfort. Spalled or drummy coping is cut out and rebuilt before the surround is laid so the finish runs cleanly into the pool edge.

Detail

Pool surrounds across South East Queensland

Wet, bare feet, and children running. Slip rating and comfort underfoot decide this one before looks do.

A pool surround is the only concrete on the property that is routinely walked on wet, barefoot and at speed. That makes slip resistance the specification, not a preference — we work at R11 to R12 here, using a washed aggregate or a lightly textured overlay rather than anything smooth.

Comfort matters just as much. A coarse aggregate that is fine on a driveway is unpleasant on bare feet, so pool work gets a finer blend and a heavier wash-back, or a stamped texture with rounded relief.

Coping is usually part of the job. Spalled, drummy or lifting coping edges get cut out and rebuilt before the surround is laid, so the finished surface runs cleanly into the pool edge instead of stopping at a repair.

Questions

The questions we get asked

Will pool chemicals damage the finish?

Splash-out is normal service for these systems. The sealer is the sacrificial layer — re-seal every few years and the surface underneath is unaffected.

Can you resurface right up to the water?

Up to and including the coping, once any spalled coping is repaired. The pool is protected and masked for the duration.

Do you quote on site?

Always. The slab gets a test grind and a moisture check before anyone quotes a finish for it.
