A resurfaced slab has two lifespans: the bonded coating, which lasts many years of ordinary residential service on properly prepared concrete, and the sealer above it, which is a wearing layer replaced every three to five years in full sun. Early failures are almost always skipped preparation, moisture from below, or a sealer never renewed.
Two different lifespans
A resurfaced slab has two clocks running. The coating itself — the cementitious layer bonded to your concrete — lasts as long as the bond holds, which on properly prepared concrete means many years of ordinary residential service. The sealer above it is a wearing layer with a much shorter life, and it is meant to be replaced.
When people say a resurfaced driveway "only lasted a few years", they are almost always describing a sealer that was never renewed, or a coating that was laid on an unprepared slab and delaminated. Those are different failures with different causes.
What actually shortens the life
- Skipped preparation. Laying over sealer, glue, paint or laitance guarantees delamination. This is the number one cause of early failure.
- Moisture from below. Slabs sitting in permanent wet or with rising damp push coatings off from underneath.
- Standing water. A slab that ponds keeps the surface saturated and grows organic growth, and both attack the sealer.
- No re-seal. Once the sealer is gone the coating wears directly. Re-sealing is cheap; replacing a worn-through coating is not.
- Point loads and turning. Trailer jockey wheels, caravan legs and constant wheel scrub in the same spot wear any surface faster than traffic spread across the slab.
Realistic maintenance rhythm in South East Queensland
Full-sun driveways: expect to re-seal roughly every three to five years. Shaded or covered areas: longer, often five to seven. Pool surrounds sit in the middle, because splash-out and UV both work on them.
Beyond sealing, maintenance is unglamorous. Hose it. Pressure clean occasionally at low pressure with a wide fan — a turbo nozzle held close will cut into any decorative finish, including real stone. Keep leaf litter off shaded sections, because that is what feeds the black growth.
Which finishes wear longest
Mechanically polished concrete and exposed aggregate wear longest, because in both cases the wearing surface is stone. Stamped and stencilled finishes sit in the middle. Thin sprayed coatings are the most dependent on sealer maintenance, because there is less material above the slab.
That said, the difference between finishes is smaller than the difference between good and bad preparation. A well-prepared sprayed overlay will outlive a badly prepared aggregate one every time.

How often does a resurfaced driveway need re-sealing?
Roughly every three to five years in full sun, longer under cover. It is a low-cost job and it is what keeps the colour looking as laid.
Can a worn resurfaced driveway be redone?
Yes. A sound existing overlay can often be recoated after grinding and cleaning, which is cheaper than starting again.
Does the finish fade?
Oxide colour is stable. What dulls is the sealer, and that is replaceable.
